The stretch of rue des Martyrs that crosses the 9th arrondissement feels like a market that never quite closes. Cheesemongers, bakers, greengrocers, wine shops and cafés follow one another from Notre-Dame-de-Lorette up towards the boulevard. Around it, the area known as SoPi, short for South Pigalle, mixes residential streets, restaurants and neighbourhood bars. Food streets and tree-lined avenues
The area reads in two parts. On one side, rue des Martyrs and the streets that open onto it, such as rue Clauzel or rue de Navarin, with their shop windows and terraces. On the other, avenue Trudaine, wide and lined with trees, running towards square d’Anvers and giving the district a calmer air. Further west, rue Henry-Monnier, rue Frochot and rue Victor-Massé keep old facades, passages and a few gated cités.
Buildings date mostly from the first half of the 19th century and from the Haussmann era. Flats range from small homes under the roofs to a fine first floor with a balcony. Many buildings have no lift, or one added later, and you often go in through a carriage door and then a courtyard.
